Summer Storm

Her entrance was like a summer storm.

That is to say you could not gauge her

intentions until it was too late.

At first she was entertaining, providing a much needed reprieve

From the stagnancy of our lives, the monotony.

But at some point, and everyone will describe a different one,

Things changed.

She became wild.

Awesome.

Unpredictable.

Dangerous.

The times of rest between her outburst were of a shorter and shorter nature.

Closer together came the flashes, the thundering roar.

Tears fell like rain, an illustration of the dashed hopes of her admirers.

We knew she left destruction in her path.

Fires that would need to be tended,

Hearts wounded in need of healing,

Who had hoped they would be the ones carried along to ride the lightning.

Then of a sudden she was gone……just gone.

Leaving in her wake the memory or temporary refreshment,

And her sweet electric smell to charge the air.

I find that although she was hard to take all at once,

With her passionate thundering and loud, “I AM HERE” pronouncements.

I miss her

Oh so much.

I await her return.

  1. A very vivid character drawing. I like the close analogy of the storm; an intertwined comparison that makes one equivalent to the other. We have people like that in our lives sometimes, don’t? Whose entrance has become turbulent, but whose exit leaves a hollow space. Very good poem.

  2. That poem gave me chills. I love the storms. Scary. Exciting. Refreshing. How boring and dry life would be without them.

  3. Thank you and yes, the excitement of people who are like storms are what hooks us as destructive as they can ultimately be for some reason we are drawn by their electricity.

  4. I love this metaphor. This poem builds slowly, like the powerful, transforming storm it brings to mind. Lovely.

  5. I like this poem and recorded a song last summer called ‘A Texas Storm’. My friend alissa’s voice and words after a summer storm in Texas that all my friends in Austin seem to remember… after a hot day. If the writer of this poem was interested there’s instrumental space after her storytelling at the beginning. If you would be interested in reading your writing to get dropped into a later portion of this music(already released)… I could show you the track. I recorded alissa’s words at her natural cadence. Then, half-blindly added it at a point in the top of what was an instrumental storm-inspired piece. Anyway, if there’s any interest in this- I think its a fitting thing. I can send you the song. I identified with your poem. Great job!
