The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill – The End Of the World As We Know It?

Some people seem oblivious to the possible outcome of the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. It has the potential to release 4.2 million gallons a day. Multiply that by 90 days and you have 378 million gallons of black, life robbing goo in the Gulf and on the shore lines. If dispersants are used, you can add the number of gallons of semi-toxic to toxic chemicals it will take to disperse the oil. Dispersants don’t make the oil go away. They will simply suspend the oil in the water. The Gulf of Mexico will then become dirty dish water. For those interested in cashing in on this disaster, investing in sea food might be a wise move. It will soon become a rare dish that only the affluent will be able to afford. You might invest in other foods as well because the prices on them will go up since people will be forced off of seafood which will cause the demand for beef and pork to rise. It’s doubtful that canned tuna and potted meats will be inexpensive much longer. Household detergents might rapidly rise in price with the amount of detergents they will have to use if they decide to use dispersants. Of course, the price of everything will rise due to the price of transportation costs because of the resulting rise in the price of oil.

Besides sea life being destroyed, animals and birds which live in the marshes and wetlands will be threatened. The wildlife in the Florida Everglades could be eradicated. Rare birds, mammals, reptiles, plants, invertebrates, amphibians, and mollusks will suffer horrible deaths should the spill reach the area. Beach front property in the Gulf of Mexico will not be a very attractive commodity. The Gulf Stream could cause it to endanger the East Coast beaches and Gulf Stream islands as well.

Plants, animals, birds, and even humans in the long run, are at risk from this disaster. The toxins that are being and will be distributed into the briny waters will reach land as well. What is crude oil? The Earth Science from Moorland School website explains.

“Fossil fuels were formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals that once lived millions of years ago. Oil and natural gas are the products of the deep burial and decomposition of dead plants and animals. Heat and pressure, in the absence of oxygen, transform the decomposed material into tiny pockets of gas and crude oil. The oil and gas then migrates through the pores in the rocks to eventually collect in reservoirs.”

And

“Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with small amounts of other chemicals such as sulfur. The crude oil is useless as a mixture and must be sent to an oil refinery to be separated. Crude oils from different parts of the world, or even from different depths in the same oilfield, contain different mixtures of hydrocarbons and other compounds. This is why they vary from light colored volatile liquids to thick, dark oils.”

Depending upon the makeup of the oil, it could have high levels of toxic chemicals such as benzene, xylene, and other chemicals that are hazardous to life.

From MadSci Network:

“Paraffins, Olefins, Naphthenes, and Aromatics. In this context, paraffins are straight-chain or branched hydrocarbons in which there are no double or triple bonds between carbon atoms. Olefins are similar to paraffins, but they contain at least one multiple bond in their chemical structure. Naphthenes are saturated hydrocarbons, just like paraffins, but they incorporate a ring of carbon atoms into their chemical structure. Aromatics contain a benzene ring in their structure. Oil refineries are factories for separating these different types of compounds from one another and for converting compounds from one type into compounds of another type. “

Burning the oil sends the chemicals into the atmosphere where they can be carried by the winds. Depending on the wind direction, this could cause harmful chemicals to make their way to cities along the coast lines. Generally, a large amount of methane will be released from oil wells as well. Unfortunately, it seems that API (American Petroleum Institute) has taken down the educational pages to which the engineer links to give more specific formulas for the makeup of crude oil as well as its other educational pages.

Gulf Stream Water Temperatures (Yellow and Orange) – NASA (Public Domain)

As you can see from the picture above in the yellow and orange, the Gulf Stream reaches far beyond the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Gulf Stream – NOAA (Public Domain)

As you can see in this picture, the Gulf Stream reaches down into South America and across the Caribbean. The Gulf Stream, at about 30°W, 40°N, splits in two, with the northern stream crossing to northern Europe and the southern stream recirculating off of West Africa. Depending on currents and wind conditions, there is a possibility that oil and chemicals from this spill could be picked up by other currents and winds threatening Ireland and Great Britain. It could also be picked up by the West Wind drift and the North Atlantic Drift as seen in the picture below.

Probert Encyclopedia Antiquarian Map Archive

Should a hurricane arise during the spill, hazardous oil and chemicals could be blown farther inland than some may have under consideration. Depending upon how long the leak actually lasts and how much oil and gas rises from the subterranean well, there could be damage to much of the world’s oceans and coast lines. The worst case scenario could possibly be a large step toward the end of the world as we know it.

There has been much urging to switch to alternative forms of energy in the last two decades. Unfortunately, the words were not only ignored, but attacked by the Republican politicians. The, “Drill, baby, drill! And drill now!” results of the comments of Sarah Palin and Michael Steele memorably chanted at the Republican National Convention in 2008 has come to haunt them. This was certainly not putting the country first, nor was it considering any of the rest of the world.

Currently, some of the best minds available are working on the problem of this cataclysmic oil spill. It is unknown how effective their ideas and solutions will be. Certainly, there is going to be an atrocious amount of death of sea life, birds, and animals which inhabit the affected areas. Will the oceanographers, scientists, and petroleum engineers be able to come up with an effective solution to this disaster of biblical proportions? Will Sarah Palin learn to, as Fox News is so fond of saying, “Shut up?” Only time will tell.

  1. Changing everyday cars to hydrogen through the governments and oil company’s.
Using oil company’s and goverment funding to establish hydrogen water pumps and piping to pump water away from shore. Using cars to cycle the water as fuel meaning everyone with a vehicle
Would suck up the oil as the world slowly develops millions of cars with modified gas tanks as hydrogen cells.
to fight this by using our lakes and rivers for fuel aka water changed to hydrogen would save the earth.

Its like cleaning a fishtank in theory instead of little lifejackets of hopeless faith booms.
We will probably have a disaster untill someone turns a brown thumb into a green thumb.
We are failing untill we let go of greed and make fuel from water for everyone.

Our marketing system would rise along with economy because instead of paying over 500 a month and or more in gas. We would be able to spend that towards repairing economical issues and have the ablility to save ourselves through free transportation to build what we have lost and are loosing back.

Eitherwise I think its a matter of summer consisting of if you swim you might get sick.

Time is slowly wasting with ignorance. Spread the word and thought but behold the truth when told.

We are held to fail unless there is consideration on everyones behalf.

Every human with a car could participate in driving the world to success and not disaster. Its as simple as creating a universal gas tank like other countries to replace tanks in everyday cars then create fueling stations close to shores. Turning clunkers and guzzlers into a beautiful thing. Guzzlers would become oil sucking pirranahs along with releiving the economy.

Teenagers and licensed youth along with the poor would be able to try to find jobs without worrys on costs for transportation. Busses would be ran off water and fuel costs could be releived and paied to fund replenishing what we need funding with.

Bye bye budget cuts or bye bye world. This is a decision someone needs to make before the chance is gone………

  2. Drive baby drive or drill our way into a hole? We will watch and see how much it means to our higher powered people…

Stealthy is watching our world in peril.

We can only hope for a revolution into happiness….

Our flailing is failing as time wastes everyday into disaster upon greater decisions we can not allow due to greed. Oil companies are killing our beauty to the world with greed and evil….

  3. I was a little amused when one of the main articles following the oil spill speculated on the different organizations that were lining up to sue the oil companies for loss. Rolling on their tongues the big figures of hopeful legal gain, the reporter pointed out that Alaska sued Exxon Valdez for 3 billion after their big boo-boo. What they didn’t mention was that Exxon promptly went to court and battled the figures. The last settlement, which occurred just this year, had dwindled the amount to 1.5 million, and we still haven’t seen a dime from for the local people who cleaned up the spill and hazarded their lives, for the loss of wildlife and clean water, for the damage done to the environment.

Will Sarah stop saying drill, baby, drill? I think it’s doubtful. There has been scarcely a hesitant foot in the march to drill the Chukchi and Beaufort Sea. As long as there is money to be had, apparently, anything is worth the gamble.

  4. Within a short period of time, this oil pollution will disperse worldwide and coat all the earth’s oceans in a petroleum film…all the plankton will die and soon the oceans will be sterile….w/o plankton to turn CO2 into oxygen, land animals will struggle for oxygen….heavy breathing….the greenhouse effect will send temperatures to 130 degrees, the ice caps will melt and flood the coasts…radiation will kill all the unprotected land creatures(except roaches) and farming on land will cease to exist…prepare to live underground to escape the 300 mph, 50 mile wide numerous tornadoes….the oil will eventually seap into all ground water….don’t forget mass riots, marshall law, economic disaster…all within this decade….book soon available at http://www.anegrampublishing…..

  5. First, you have to understand that these corporations are driven by one, and only one, motive: profit. Therefore, before they take any steps towards either decreasing oil consumption or even investing in additional safety features on their rigs, they’ll ask if it’s going to be cost-effective, ie, whether it won’t cut too deeply into their stock dividends and bonuses.

Obviously, oil accidents aren’t a daily phenomenon, or else the outcry against them would be so great and the costs involved so high that oil drilling would’ve stopped long ago. So, it might make more sense for oil companies, financially speaking, to let things go on as before and hope that the occasional major accident will strike someone else. And if it happens sometime, well, what are insurance companies for, and what do mere regulations matter when there’s money to be made?

In fact, a total extermination of local flora and fauna would probably be a good thing for these companies; they’d then claim there was no longer any need for environmental or other regulations at all and they should be allowed to do as they wished.

Also, let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that someone invented a method of easily and safely splitting water to make almost free, completely environmentally safe, and easily available fuel for cars. What do you think the oil companies will do, roll over and die? Of course not. What they’ll do is try and buy the rights to the invention to destroy it, or failing that, to discredit it, to bribe media sources to ignore or trash it, to bribe government agencies to deny permission while never-ending “studies” are undertaken, and so on. What they will not do is stop drilling till the last drop of oil is sucked out.

It’s all in the nature of the capitalist beast.

Oh, by the way, has anyone encountered the nutjob theory that a North Korean sub on a kamikaze mission torpedoed and then blew itself up under the rig to sink it?

Someone was asleep at the switch there. They ought to have made it an Iranian submarine. Obama and his Zionazi allies would have jumped at the excuse to justify the long-planned attack on Iran.

  6. I really don’t want to send people into a state of paralytic fear, but I do know a few things about what is going on in the water. I’ve seen fish kills from releases and they were much smaller releases than this. I’ve experienced what corrosion can do to metal. We’re talking about salt water and sand. If you’ve ever dived or even snorkeled, you know a little about ocean currents. Imagine how it is out in the deep. Should the efforts to cap this thing fail and, even worse, should a hurricane arise, things might start looking pretty grim.

A lot of the time, things look good on the drafting board, but don’t quite pan out as you hoped when you get to the field. Let’s just hope that the engineers thought of every possible mishap and planned a backup strategy that will be sufficient. I fear the biggest problem will come from them wanting to continue to retrieve oil from the well.

  7. Bill, there have been countless plans introduced on the boards to take the place of gas guzzlers; plans that trace all the way back to the 1960’s-1970’s. Electric cars, automobiles that run on methane gas; there are even those who know how to convert their automobiles to run on alcohol. Iceland led the way toward alternate energy sources for years, relying primarily on hydro-electric technology; even for their vehicles. We all see what their pioneering gained – a stab in the back by the banking industry. The automobile industry routinely buys up patents for alternate energy vehicles, which sit on the shelves gathering dust. We have the technology to go green, but it isn’t used because having only one major source of energy means more dependence by the consumers. It’s a monopoly game.

I imagine Florida will soon be seeing belly-up fish and oil choked water birds on its sparkling beaches, only the beaches won’t be sparkling. They’ll cry for their flamingos, their turtles, even their shellfish the way they did not cry for our puffins, our seagulls and our seals. The world wants oil to feed its energy, but how is it going to feed its belly when oil has ruined all the food sources. Petro-chemicals in the fertilizer, oil in our plastic containers, oil in the water… we might as well adapt to eating oil.

  8. The oil disaster is crazy because the leak is so deep. I hope BP do all against the spread of the oil. The nature will be destroyed for a long time.

  9. I would like to point out that all of this cannot be laid at the door of the Sarah Palin’s of the world. It was only a couple of months ago that our esteemed President opened the gulf to more drilling, much to the dismay of many of us that had voted for him. It seemed a ridiculous risk and that prophecy has come to roost quicker maybe that thought. And we are left with absolutely no high ground to stand on because of our President’s decision.

With what looks like a bad hurricane season shaping up and oil already on land we are in the midst of a debacle. All this may or may not bring home some hard truths to Americans but we must not forget that the islands in the area and Mexico are most likely going to be effected and who is going to help them?

People need to move away from fossil fuels. Honestly, in this land of innovation it escapes reason why we have lost our fervour for being the first to engineer and advance civilization. We are complacenct and complicit.

  10. Isn’t it coincidence that the WORST environmental disaster in human history will affect “drill baby DRILL” Red States Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and crazy South Carolina? Not to mention Tennessee and Kentucky getting hit with un-heard-of flooding.
Georgia experiencing years of drought and Oklahoma multi-funnel tornados.

(Lloyd the Baptist was right… Every Conservative wacko in America will be burning in HELL by 2012. see: post on jinnbad.blogspot.com)

Progressives have been WARNING you ignorant redneck Right-Wingers for decades but you HARDHEADS choose to listen to the corporate spokespersons like Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, Robertson, Hagee etc… HOW’S THAT WORKING FOR YA? (…and FOX News is owned by the Saudi Royals)

    TAKE A HINT!

It’s as though GOD himself has come down from heaven to rub Republican/Conservative noses in the evil BS they’ve spewed for the last few years. It seems like just yesterday that Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck worked their groupies into a cult frenzy with calls for off-shore oil DRILLING.

IF Democrats/Progressives were degenerates like Republicans/Conservatives we’d probably come up with something vicious and cruel like “we don’t want our tax dollars used to save your Red State fishing or tourism industry”. But the LEFT-WING really DOES love the USA and wouldn’t kick our fellow citizens when they’re down like the right-wing mental deficient’s do.

Get the government out of your lives, right? LET the Corporations have their way? THIS IS WHAT YOU GET! Profits over patriotism or the least bit of human dignity, social or environmental concerns. You think the multi-national corporations care about the American PEOPLE? Hell NO! Maybe you Conservative wackos didn’t notice but Corporations are the ones who moved all your good paying jobs to Communist China and caused the meltdown of our economy WITH THE HELP OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY…

I want to know something else… WHY is it that every other civilized nation on the planet, EXCEPT the USA, REQUIRES Oil drilling operations to have back up plans and top shelf shut off valves in case of emergency? I guess British Petroleum thought $500,000 was TOO MUCH for a workable shut off system. I know they LOBBIED in 2003 against the US government putting such REGULATION into place… (and I heard Cheney’s Halliburton is involved with this and other spills)
    NOTE: search Greg Palast
Ohhhh and isn’t it telling the Times Square idiot bomber tried to make a hasty escape to Dubai? …Just like Dick Cheney’s Halliburton. A corporation who made a fortune from shoddy workmanship. Unlike the average American, corporations like Halliburton, Massey Energy and British Petroleum can get away with shoddy workmanship, mining explosions and oil spill disasters because the Republican Party (and some Blue Dog Democrats) are their paid for Ho’s…

IT’S ACCOUNTABILITY TIME! If the PEOPLE don’t DEMAND IT now then you don’t deserve rights and freedoms the USA represents. Conservative wacko’s are always calling the French cowards but at least during the French Revolution the PEOPLE had the balls to make Aristocrats pay the price for their acts of evil.

I’m tired of hearing talk like this from the Left-wing in our nation – continuing to refer to the political class as “ours” (“our president,” “our congressman,” etc…) as though these people are in any way, shape or form “ours” and that somehow the average person is in any way responsible for what they do. Newsflash: these politicals are not “ours” and do not represent us! Regardless of who you vote for, this sick joke called the “election” process continually puts people in power who are deeply-connected to special interests and are more than willing to look out for *their* interests at the expense of your own.

You want to know why there’s going to be close to 380 million gallons of oil pouring into the gulf in the next 3 months? It’s because your government doesn’t care about you – because they are more concerned with returning favors to special interests in exchange for bribes (oops… I mean “campaign contributions”) than looking out for the people they claim to serve.

  12. This is the way the world ends

This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

  13. @Christopher
As President Obama is the President of the United States of America, and I live in American I consider him “ours”.

Whether or not anybody can be held accountable anymore is seriously questionable I agree.

(and not I’m not a democrat, nor do I belong to any other party)

  14. [qoute=grainnerhuad]
As President Obama is the President of the United States of America, and I live in American I consider him “ours”.
I no longer think of any political as being mine (let alone “ours”) simply because they hold a damn title – they might fill an office, but they sure as hell don’t represent “us.”

[qoute=grainnerhuad]Whether or not anybody can be held accountable anymore is seriously questionable I agree.

(and not I’m not a democrat, nor do I belong to any other party)
I never insinuated that you were necessarily a “Democrat” (as though they are in any way significantly different from “Republicans” at all…), nor was that statement about the American Left-wing necessarily aimed at you – I mentioned that because most people I know who still think of the so-called “elected” officials as representing us and that the vote still matters are from the ideological Left-wing (who aren’t necessarily “Democrats,” BTW). I’ve read your pieces over the last few months and you strike me as having many Left-wing sentiments, so I figured that you must have picked up that line of thought from other members of the Left-wing you affiliate with.

If anything, that statement was intended to chastise the whole Left-wing movement and its attitude towards the ballot-box sham the American sheeple participate in every 2 years – it was a condemnation of the very idea that anything we do at the polls counts for shit, that the common person plays any significant role in government or that “reform” within the system is anything more than a bad joke. If there is going to be any change at all, it will happen at the local level, driven by people acting in their own interests and acting *outside* the parameters established by society: it won’t come from some “new blood” in Washington or by a new bill in Congress – it can only come by individuals within a community asserting their sovereignty and acting on their own accord (with or without the approval of the establishment).

  15. I have lots of sentiments, however point taken and I agree with you regarding making a difference from the ground up. This whole mess needs to be pushed into a pit so rebuilding can begin.

  16. The blame can be placed at the door step of every hideous creature who prolonged or squashed the plans for alternative energy resources. We should have started the conversion process thirty years ago. Instead, it was decided to bleed the cash cow dry. It wasn’t ignorance. It wasn’t lack of technology. It was greed, pure and simple. So blatant was their arrogance, they were proud of their title, “Corrupt Bastards’ Club” and wore their CBC caps with pride.

  17. Considerably, the nightmare of the Florida oil pollution is really a burning question. Your post is worthy contribution to this hot oil desaster. We have to watch it in depth. Although I do not concur with some small things all in all Im agreeing to your position. I am looking forward to forthcoming updates, which hopefully brings better ideas and terminates the oil problem.

  18. I’m not sure about the validity of this piece since there are no references, but it does have some interesting information about the oil spill.

The Cover-up: BP’s Crude Politics and the Looming Environmental Mega-Disaster

“There is other satellite imagery being withheld by the Obama administration that shows what lies under the gaping chasm spewing oil at an ever-alarming rate is a cavern estimated to be around the size of Mount Everest. This information has been given an almost national security-level classification to keep it from the public, according to our sources.”

Playing the blame game isn’t going to do anyone any good. Both the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration had a hand in this cataclysm. The Tea Partiers did, too, since they supported the “Drill baby, drill,” sentiment of the Republican party. It might be time to just embrace one another then bend over and kiss our posteriors goodbye… or not.

  19. They finally released a version of the footage with sounds from the ocean floor.

  20. This blog is a great place to lay out the very real outcomes that most certainly will ensue from this tragic, malcious, earth mongering oil spill.
    My question for anyone hitting up the shopping mall buying Gucci sunglasses while listening to Lady GaGa on thier I-phone now is;
WAKE UP!!! WHAT HAVE WE ALL NOW AS COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEINGS COME FACE TO FACE WITH CONCERNING OFF SHORE DRILLING?
NO more off shore drilling, time to get a bike or a hybrid and start changing the world….NOW.

  21.
WAKE UP!!! WHAT HAVE WE ALL NOW AS COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEINGS COME FACE TO FACE WITH CONCERNING OFF SHORE DRILLING?
NO more off shore drilling, time to get a bike or a hybrid and start changing the world….NOW.
And what will that do, exactly? Hybrids are already pretty popular vehicles and even if we all rode bikes everywhere there would still be a huge demand for oil – the ever-expanding military-industrial complex will sure need it for their toys and factories, ensuring that demand for oil will remain high regardless of what the common person does.

What we see here in the Gulf is evidence that society as we know it needs to be *destroyed* – not simply “reformed” through some kind of eco-consciousness campaign pushing for alternative energy or more bike lanes…

  22. Hi there, I don’t agree with everything in this write-up, but you do make some very decent points. I’m very involved in this matter and I myself do alot of research as well. Either way it was a well thoughtout and nice read so I figured I would leave you a comment.

  23. If you enjoy Christmas, make the most of this year and the next, because according to the Mayan calendar, they will be your last. Possibly (2012).

  24. typical of stupid people to try to blame a single person or entity. it’s society, you stupid fucks.. me, you.. the whole thing. stop trying to blame sarah palin and barack obama for the ills of vanity and luxury. we made our beds and now we have to sleep in them.

  25. I truly like your response about this topic. You dealt with the topic perfectly and have won me over as a reader. Keep up the great content and I’ll make sure to tell my friends about your site.

  26. I’m just disgusted by this tragedy. Where can I find an realistic assessment of the real size of the spill? The statistics are all over the place. Thanks for your informative post.

  27. This has the potential to be an extinction event, comparable if not worse than an asteroid hitting the gulf as it did millions of years ago.

They have ZERO idea how to stem the flow, and they are considering using a mini nuke to plug it up. Well (pardon the pun), if they aren’t able to stop it, even if for a few years, then can you say dead oceans? Dead formerly life-supporting oceans? Billions of barrels of thick toxic goo spreading worldwide for years and years. Plumes are popping up all over down there. The whole strata has been compromised. No one knows what to do.

If they go ahead and use a nuke, this could be even worse. Consider this: there are HUGE lakes of oil and methane and other toxins down there under the sea. If they are even able to drill down and place a nuke, then what happens if the sea floor collapses onto this oil field that is so huge no one can say? The pressures of being under a mile of water are already beyond comprehension, so if it collapses and opens massive new fissures, you can kiss your ass goodbye. Or if it ignites these underwater and overwater lakes of oils and methane, can you say bye bye gulf of Mexico, goodbye to the world? Tsunamis the likes of which have never before or never will be seen again…we are talking worldwide catastrophe and a life extinction for most of lief on this god forsaken planet. All from a little pin prick in the crust of the Earth.

We warned them and warned them this was a bad idea, but the politicians took the money and ran. Maybe this is the way the super elites have been planning to depopulate the planet by 80-90%. By god they’ve got their plans. They won’t starve. But the rest of us, forget it. Black rain, black skies, black death.

I am SCARED, can you tell? This is beyond catastrophe? While these idiots in Congress are so busy placing blame, no one has figured anything out how to stop this insanity. We haven’t even come to hurricane season. If I were Obama, I would order all the wells shut down and capped RIGHT NOW. Corporations be damned. The shortsighted greedy scumbags got us into this mess. Maybe this is what the Mayans were warning us about. End of the world, and new age begins 2012, maybe sooner. This oil could go on for years! but before that we would be in a world of mess. The economy alone is doomed, so you better start making plans for your family’s survival. I wouldn’t take this lightly folks. This is BIG! NOTHING BIGGER

  28. “A new poll found that 43 percent of Americans think President Obama is doing a good job at handling the BP oil spill. Of course, the same poll found that 43 percent of Americans hate pelicans.” –Jimmy Fallon

  29. Thank you for your in-depth contribution. Substantially, the question of the Florida oil polution is certainly a burning question. I am really looking forward to next updates, which hopefully brings hope and stops the oil problem.

  30. This entire catastrophe with BP is idiocy. The total amount of pouring forth into the Gulf of Mexico rose by thousands of barrels Wednesday right after an underwater droid plainly struck the containment cap that has been catching oil from BP’s Macondo well. I question how much desolation this entire oil spill is going to cost the earth when it’s all over and done with

  31. Right now has 162 conditions of sickness reported with the Lousisiana, 128 are individuals laborers, The oldest worker is 64 many years old in there. I experience sorry for these workers. I definitely hate individuals oil corporation.

  32. The oil spill is nothing to laugh at but I just saw a kid wearing a t-shirt that cracked me up. BP – We’re bring oil to America’s shores. I died laughing because BP’s billion dollar image change to their new sunflower logo is forever going to be associated with the worst environmental disaster to strike America. Check out the shirt here – http://bit.ly/bJAuTb

  33. I sincerely hope that they can get a handle on the spill as soon as possible. The thunderstorms we have been having lately haven’t helped either.

  34. Most important: 11 men lost their lives when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20. This is a tribute by Steve Joynt to the 11 men who died on the Deepwater Horizon, “Oil spill Day 100: The 11 men who died on the Deepwater Horizon” We can never lose sight of the human cost of BP’s and others’ malfeasance.

  35. BP is literally banking on our “gnat-sized” attention spans and our understandable crisis fatigue to let them get away virtually scot free from any responsibility, whether financial or moral, for this massive, man made disaster. They continue to inhibit the flow of accurate information about what has and what is currently happening in the Gulf, they continue to destroy and hide evidence of their culpability, buying scientists, lawyers and politicians, even reporters. Media outlets want us to believe that the oil is largely gone or missing somehow. It may not be as visible now in some areas, but it is there continuing to suck oxygen from the water, causing huge “dead zones” — worse, the toxic dispersants used, largely against recommendations, are there too, making the oil even more dangerous. Please do not buy the media line and assume that soon the crisis will be past. Don’t let BP or Congress off the hook. They could be the only creatures on the hook in large portions of the gulf right now!

  36. […] that painfully signals the advancing epidemic of poor global health.  It marks one year since the Mexico Gulf Coast oil spill; a tragedy that analysts say isn’t really as great as it first appeared.  They point […]
