Grainne and Mitch, i know you have both been following my Etta Mae stories since the beginning stories. In fact, Mitch was around at her birth, when i had nothing more than a few anecdotes about her legendary feats. I was desperately trying to flesh her out into a complete personality, and sabotaged one or two forums with her displays of outrageous behavior. She was just a youngster back then, trying to find herself. She has many stories left to tell, and i hope they do end up in a book.

Grainne, i learned about mules and cow ponies during my summers in Delta Junction as a child, along with the stories of Trapper Jim. Those were magic years. My sister liked the mule, but i didn't because it was quite a bit taller than the cow ponies, and i'm not very agreeable with heights. I preferred one of the smaller ponies, but he was a devil. If i didn't give him sugar before mounting him, he bit me. He loved to gallop, but if i gave him too much rein, he bucked. I finally learned just how much rein to give him and joined in a race. My sister decided she wanted to race, too, and that's when we learned about mules.

I just love me some Etta Mae. She's my type of woman. And although I did read Black Beaty as a girl, I was much more engaged with White Fang, Call of the Wild and My Side of the Mountain.
I also had my first riding lessons on a Mule, but then I was a young girl who lived in and ran amuk in an old Ghost Town near Yosemite (Columbia) These stories bring back memories of those times, my mom taking the donkey and mule to town to make money giving tourists pictures next to and on them. Our mule was the most beautiful animal, and when I was older and had a retired cow pony I can tell you that animal was the biggest trickter in the world, but as close to the family as any dog.

Great Good Stories.

Great job on the finale! Etta's a wonderful character and deserves to be a world famous archetype for rural life. She deserves her own novel. ;)

A.B., i'm glad you enjoyed the humor of my Trapper Jim series. This is the fourth in a collection of short stories that begins with Trapper Jim's Romance, a somewhat detailed account of how he hooked up with Etta Mae, and an introduction to the characteristics of his dog, Mutt Head. Alaskan culture has always more deeply influenced by Northern Canadian culture than by the U.S. Our most exclaimed humorist writer and poet is Robert Service. We quickly erase the border lines with the references to the Yukon and prospectors. While young American girls grew up holding "Black Beauty" close to their chests, Alaskan girls grew up clutching copies of "White Fang" and "The Call of the Wild". It pleases me greatly that you enjoyed the story.

Beste, the foundation for the subject matter lies very much in the background of my native surroundings. The stories are taken from the time period just prior to the introduction of the oil pipeline; a time period when the Alaskan population was so small, you had connections with nearly everyone in the state. Although i borrow heavily from two illustrious characters who had managed to make themselves legendary in Alaskan story telling, all of the characters are prototypes of typical Alaskan settlers and Native populations during the 1960's era. My foundation is built off my heritage.

How do you come up with all of this? You must have some good foundation on the subject right?
