Great Article. But let me clarify one thing Lucknow didn't have any mass scale rioting during 1992(nor did it during partition or any other time).Yes,there were few slogan shouting and a few incidents of stone pelting on police vehicles(mostly by outsiders returning from ayodhya) thats it.

Lucknow is by far the least communally polarised city in India.I was 20 then and clearly remember the tension all around.I too happen to live in Chowk and let me clarify chowk is not a muslim area.It has almost 60% hindu population.

Chowk was put under curfew for a long time and unlike other cities where people were busy killing/raping there neighbours in chowk(also in many other parts of old city) meetings were held between 2 communities on how to maintain peace.

On the evening of 7th december when reports of rioting from other cities started to come in a similar meeting was held in our locality and and i still remember at the end of meeting a gentleman shouted at top of his voice "To damn with allah and ram..if given a chance i will make a toilet there..." and everyone broke into laughter and trust me we all laughed after nearly 2 days(given the tense situation)

During curfew times food(and kites) was smuggled in and not once during distribution hindu or muslim came into picture whole day kite flying matches took place.Since out locality had almost equal number of people from both communities plans were also made who will hide in whose house just in case mass scale rioting did start.

Those were really black days and i am proud that i was in lucknow at that time and saw true spirit of the city.I was unfortunate enough to be in ahmedabad during the 2002 riots. It was after those riots that i have truly fallen in love with lucknow inspite of its numerous problems and salute every single person living in the city for what they are and what they stood for when world around them burned.

Thank you for a very clear and helpful post. I am definitely a violator of many of these rules. I often find myself conflicted when writing a blog post because I see myself writing more than people want to read, but I feel that I have to do the subject matter justice by thoroughly covering it. I feel that by following some of these rules I end up cutting out important aspects to the discussion. I guess you have to find a balance.

Religious and ethnic violence is hardly unique for most Indians. I think a lot of us have interesting tales to tell.

What an incredible experience; at least by the standards of a Western World that hasn't been occupied with war on their doorstep for a very long time. So odd to think about. I can thoroughly understand a conflict ignited for political reasons; so often the cunning hand of legislation keeps a full platter for the few at the expense of the many; but i find religious wars unfathomable. Nothing has ever been accomplished from any of them. No lives have been improved. No policies have been instated that would provide a greater tolerance. The most common place thing to happen is the vanquished rise up again and another war is ignited. The personal account carries one into the eye of the storm, making the story far more intense than what a re-telling of the historical facts would have done. As soon as you began the paragraph, "It was in that situation..." the story became riveting.
