Thanks Space Eagle, I actually think mischief and mayhem always has its place but really we do need some Space Monkeys right about now.

HubbleBoy I had never thought of Jimmy Hendrix in quite that way, his music really isn't working against itself, but as I put thought into it, at the time with the Vietnam war on, the deconstruction and reconstruction of the National Anthem was very much in the vein of Dada.

PunkMonk, Beatrice Wood is now officailly one of my favorite women and examples of all time. Living to be 104, when asked the secret of longevity, this tiny beautiful woman dressed in a gorgeous Sari laughed and said, daily surprises and chasing after younger men "even if they don't know it." Beautiful. I want to be like her. I highly recommend everyone watch at least the Documentary on her life I provided a link.

Astra, Man Ray who I didn't get a chance to cover here is/was one of the most exciting photographers and people. I highly agree, if time travel were available I would love to go back and just look in on all of that.

Christopher, I know I only briefly mentioned the Ready Made's. They are the heart of Duchamp. I hope people go to the link and take a look at the in-depth discussion on his art. The Ready Made's themeselves provide enough fodder for a theisis. In fact everything here is enough for its own individual work. It was hard to wittle down.

Rich I'm glad you picked up on the "Wit" part. There is little of it and I don't think people understand the difference between the planning, timing and thought behind wit and its baser cousin humor. Wit is a very important element of Dada and I think maybe most counter-culture movements. Those who have ears will hear.

Karla thank you. I found as I explored Dada that art became more alive in terms of a guidepost to the temperature readings of all times. I had never ever looked at this deconstruction and seemingly anti-art in this way. I think we all need to be more open to the smaller places art appears. There is much we are missing.

Rich, you said, "most art seems to get trapped by being safe", yet truthfully, should art ever be safe? Every time period has its break away artists, who, with time, become known as classics. They set the stage for that particular expression of the arts.

Grainne, that was an excellent article and a very informative read. It leaves to the mind a great deal of speculation. Here we are, a hundred years into the future, yet going through the same formal, historical dance. The world has been deconstructed, the pieces re-arranged. What brave new world will art or non-art recreate? It's an interesting concept to think about.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "readymade" art yet - particularly Micheal Duchamp's "Bicycle Wheel" or "Fountain" (now *that's* nose-thumbing at its best!).

wow, I mean; WOW !! Art is nothing or it is everything ... how a generation expresses itself, what is commercial, what will last over time are all questions without answers. Most art seems to get trapped by being safe, but any artist has to pay the bills, so safe is always a consideration. But every once in awhile, art moves beyond the market place and changes how everyone sees themselves, and in fact, the world itself. There are so many examples, Picasso being an easily understandable one ... Picasso's appreciation of Africian art, and of "form" as subject, made the art world a very different place. There is little "wit" anywhere, and it is hard to even think of a "famous" artist currently pushing anyone's buttons anymore. I will have to re-read this, so well researched, such a delight ....... maybe you can start a new movement called GA GA .... and we can all say we knew you when ...

Ah, DADA!!!!

To be a fly on the wall when Man Ray discussed art with 'the crew'; to experience "dada 'is'".

Art truly IS an opportunity for the criticism of the times in which we live, and of life itself.

Without people who poke the balloon - and the bear - on occasion, we don't grow, develop, or change.

Thanks for this. Seriously.

Best,

-Will ("Astra")

Awesome article! I love that Dada presents itself at the precipice of change. Like it begins the bubble and is present at the bursting of the bubble. I love that you drew in the music ties to this philosophy. Someone that comes to mind is Charley Parker "Bird" with his beebop style. When other musicians heard Bird for the first time they where jaw dropped and somewhat dumbfound. It left them confused but inspired. Another example is Jimi Hendrix. Especially when he performed his version of the national anthum at Woodstock. Magnificant. Thank you for sharing this piece. You have inspired me to explore more of the art you referenced in your article because it is truely magnificant.

"If any time calls for mischief, humor, wit, absurdity and nose thumbing it is now."

I completely agree.
