I love this; I totally agree that most children are indoctrinated into their parents' belief system and most never question it...and that's where I have a problem. I really don't care what religion a person is as long as they've done the research and actually believe in the dogma being taught therein. I really think that most people would come to the same conclusions we have if they could study religion objectively- without the 'you're going to hell if you don't believe' whispering in their inner ear.
I want to recant something I just wrote---I guess I DO care what religion a person is- if that religion believes in violence, slavery, women as chattels- and ALL the Eastern religions are guilty of these- Christians, Muslims, Jews...
The whole world would be better off if we did not bow down to the manmade dictates of an invisible, unexisting diety.

Many threads here seem to try and disprove other people's faith. I have no problem with the idea of faith - there are a few things that I take on faith that I have never seen myself with my own two eyes - such as the brain in the person next to me, and the theory of the atom etc. I have looked at the evidence and made a decision that it is probably true.

"A-theism (sic) is just that: a very un-nuanced (sic) way for saying negative things about ‘God’."

Hey, Garsett...

First off, please be assured that I didn't make this up.

Secondly, also, please don't think it's an easy gig, going around, telling people the moral-equivalent of "There ain't no Santy Claus!"

Third, you've missed the entire point.

The point (I really hate hitting people in the head with a shovel!) is this: There is no 'god'.

Sorry.

As I pointed out, there is great beauty and immediacy in accepting things as they are.

You want to believe otherwise? That's not up to me.

I've read the Gita -- and the Q'ran, and the Bible, and several others, including the Egyptian Book of the Dead -- and none of them 'explain' anything.

So, I'm afraid I'm left with the same conclusion: Absent anyone pointing out an unexplainable "Made By God" stamp on the roots of a tree or something, I remain unconvinced. Incontrovertible proof requires something other than metaphor.

Casting me as 'negative' because I don't regard your imaginary-friend as real isn't productive, either.

Be well....

A-theism is just that: a very un-nuanced way for saying negative things about 'God'.
If you like to encourage other people to live in such negativity, be my guest.
It will not make you happy, however.
But you can also choose to fill in 'God' with everything that is positive.
I doubt you have ever read the description of God in the Bhagavad Gita, for example.
Or experienced God at work while using a symbol language.
In a dynamic meditation, or as a musician improvising in a band?
I see God in everything, also in nature and our efforts to live in harmony with it, which can also include science.
And it's this state of consciousness that makes all the difference.
Blessings. :-)

"I'm a Lama..."

Hey -- I'm a fire-truck. With a bell, and a siren, and a little dog in my cab that goes "Bark! Bark!"

Saying something doesn't make it so.

I've a pet-peeve of sorts about the His Lama-ness; he hung out with Nazis (he even wrote a letter as a young boy to Adolf Hitler, the 'King of the Germans') - there are photos of the guy wearing Nazi uniforms as an older teenager.

He's never repudiated this past behavior, but keeps telling everyone how greedy and warlike they are.

He might have a shred of credibility if he'd actually had to fend for himself for a time, as opposed to living in Lhasa, being catered to, hand and foot.

I suppose I'd be able to talk myself into some form of 'enlightenment' if I didn't have to hold a job, pay the bills, and deal with what most of us define as 'life'.

Until he does, he's just an overgrown boy - a case of arrested development, with fancy words....

Bruno, I'll just say 'thank you' here - the inexistence of 'god' is a comfort to me, also.

There are a few of us who didn't blindly follow one parent or the other - we did our own research. This, of course, is why every religion tries to 'catch 'em young' - because if they do, the old Jesuit saying becomes true-by-default: "Give me a boy for five years, and he's mine for life!"
