Thank you, all of you. It occurred to me to write the story after one of the boys, who has grown up into a very nice young man, came over for a visit recently and began to tell me how the trip had affected him. Well, i'm not going to tell you what he said right now. I don't want to spoil the second part of the story.

Hubbleboy, isn't it nice to know the human experience isn't always about tragedy? Sometimes, it is about triumph. It was one of my greatest pleasures, once i managed to harness in that clucking mother hen instinct, to watch these boys grow with their experience.

A.B., the Chugach might be tame compared to the Alaska Range, but both are a wilderness to take seriously into consideration. I don't recommend any bicycle tour along these two ranges unless you are a seasoned veteran or have made adequate preparations. A little knowledge about the wildlife is also helpful.

Mitch, Leon has always been a superstar in my book, and the other boys as well. But then, that was the motivation for the story.

Grainne, i split the story in half for two reasons. One, i wanted to add in some descriptions of the three "towns" we went through along the way, which kind of stretched the story out a little, and two, because i wanted to add more photographs. I just couldn't narrow them down to three or four.

A fantastic first part of what must have been an experience of pushing themselves to their limit. Individual yet a group experience with the dangers of the road yet the safety of having someone coming up to make sure they were alright when they had reached their check points. I can't wait until part two...

What a great adventure story Karla. A modern day Jack London story but without the tragedy. I loved your description of the boys and the conversation in the van. Looking forward to the next installment.
